Jean-Claude Van
Damme teams with Raul Julia for a thrill-packed adventure
on an epic scale from the screenwriter of Die Hard, 48 Hrs.
and Commando. Based on the best-selling video game, the
film hurtles beyond imagination with explosive action,
humor and amazing special effects.
Directed by Die Hard's Steven E. DeSouza, the story sees
Van Damme playing Allied Nations Colonel William F. Guile.
He is in charge of the military power sent to the
South-East Asian country of Shadaloo to stop the power-mad
dictator General M. Bison (Raul Julia), who has taken
sixty relief workers hostage and asked for $2 billion in
return for their release. General Bison gives the
world only 72 hours to respond to his twisted demands. In
that time, Guile must find the captives and confront Bison
in an electrifying battle for the fate of the free world.
The story of this movie is not that impressive, but the
fights are good and Jean Claude's cool in his blue shirt.
Trivia about
Street Fighter:
- Raul Julia's
final film appearance before his death. (Rest In Peace)
- The controls
to M. Bison's floating "desk" are identical
to the controls of the Street Fighter video game.
- The film
includes characters from the video games up to and
including Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers.
Most notably absent is Fei Long, the video-game
version of Bruce Lee.
- The final
scene of all the characters is a real-life recreation
of an animation from the video game, where all the
characters are on screen at the same time, and do
their "win" animation.
- The final
amphibious attack on M. Bison's compound, filmed on
location in Thailand, was originally supposed to be an
air assault. The Thai government wouldn't allow the
use of it's airspace for the large number of aircraft
the scene would require, so the producers changed the
final battle to a boat assault instead.
